Erythromycin for Acne Treatment

Erythromycin is an antibiotic that is commonly prescribed to treat more severe types of acne. It is available in pill, chewable tablet and oral-suspension liquid form and is typically taken 1-2 hours after meals. Erythromycin essentially works by killing acne-causing bacteria and/or inhibiting the growth and reproduction of bacteria. The drug is also well known for its fairly frequent use in treating respiratory infections ranging from pneumonia to bronchitis.

Erythromycin is only available with a prescription and is typically taken 3-4 times a day. According to the National Institutes of Health, it may take between one and three weeks to work. As your acne starts to clear, make sure you continue taking erythromycin for the entire period prescribed by your doctor since many acne sufferers make the mistake of ending their course of antibiotics too soon.

Some common side effects of erythromycin are diarrhea, stomach pain, nausea, stomach pain and vomiting, according to Drug Digest. More serious side effects that would require medical attention include dark yellow or brown urine, difficulty breathing, hearing loss or a ringing in your ears, yellowing of the eyes or skin, and skin rashes or swelling.

Erythromycin can also interact with several other drugs. Be sure to tell your doctor about any drugs you may be taking, particularly if you are taking birth control pills. If you mix birth control pills and erythromycin and are sexually active, you may end up with a little surprise nine months later.

Many doctors will simply refer to erythromycin as ‘erythromycin,’ but it is sold under several brand names that may be referenced as well. Some of those brand names include ERYC, Ery-Tab, Filmtab and PCE Dispertab, according to NIH.

If you are suffering from significant levels of acne or from cystic or nodular acne, erythromycin may work well for you. By killing bacteria and preventing it from multiplying, the drug cuts to the root of acne and helps keep skin clear.
