Tazarotene for acne treatment

Tazarotene is an acne-fighting topical solution that works by keeping pores clear of bacteria and other blemish-causing pollutants. It is sold under the brand name Tazorac and is available by prescription.

According to Medical News Today, a trade journal for medical professionals, tazarotene has also been proven effective in treating psoriasis and is becoming a commonly prescribed medication for people who suffer from that disorder. People who suffer from acne will tend to use the gel form of the product, while people with psoriasis use a cream-based product.

For acne sufferers, tazarotene is usually applied once a day at night. After washing your face with a mild cleanser and gently drying it, wait 20 to 30 minutes then apply tazarotene in a thin layer over the areas of skin affected by acne. According to the National Institutes of Health, it may take between 8 and 12 weeks to see results, although results are often seen in as little as 4 weeks. Your acne may appear worse when you first start using the drug but do not discontinue use.

The common side effects of tazarotene are similar to the side effects that can be experienced with any topical product. Possible side effects include skin irritation, burning, itching or rashes, particularly if you have sensitive skin. If a rash develops and persists, you should seek medical attention.

According to NIH, tazarotene may also make you more susceptible to skin irritation from the weather, such as wind burn and sun burn. If you are particularly susceptible to these conditions, consult your doctor.

Before taking tazarotene, notify your doctor if you are allergic to vitamin A or retinoid medicines, such as isotretinoin (Accutane), tretinoin, acitretin and etretinate. Most doctors will not prescribe tazarotene if you have previously taken any of those medications and had an allergic reaction.

If you are pregnant, looking to become pregnant or breastfeeding, do not use tazarotene. NIH has warned that the drug can be linked to serious birth defects in the womb and can cause potential harm to your baby through breastfeeding.
