Acne: An Herbal Solution

For millions of Americans who develop medical conditions that may require the use of pharmaceuticals, one of the first questions often asked is “are there any herbal remedies that will work?” The herbal remedy market has been growing like a weed (pun intended) and has become one of the healthier sectors of the U.S. economy (pun again intended).

The Freedonia Group, a respected market research organization, estimates that the market for plant-derived chemicals in the U.S. will reach $2.7 billion in 2006. This growth, according to the Freedonia Group, is largely being driven by the public’s desire for herbal supplements and new discoveries of herbal products with medicinal properties.

Herbal remedies have made inroads in the acne treatment market, and tea tree oil has become a popular product for many people suffering from mild to moderate levels of acne. The greatest benefit of tea tree oil is that it has antiseptic and disinfecting properties, so it can kill or reduce levels of acne-causing bacteria.

Tea tree oil comes from the ‘tea tree’ which grows in tropical climates and is commonly found in Australia and New Zealand. It gets its name from the fact that locals use the leaves in brewing teas, and the oil is extracted from these same leaves.

Tea tree oil is applied directly to the skin and can penetrate skin and work deep into pores. The product should be applied in a thin layer over skin affected by acne. The side effects of tea tree oil are similar to the side effects that can be experienced with any topical product such as skin irritation, burning, itching or rashes, particularly if you have sensitive skin.

Some people believe tea tree oil is a cure-all for many ailments, which is misguided and not supported by scientific evidence. However, it is clear that the product can kill bacteria and many people claim it has helped control acne breakouts with minimal risk of side effects. There is not much risk to giving it a try, but if you are not seeing results in 2-3 weeks, it would probably be in your best interest to consider other options.
