Acne 2050: Part 2
In the first part of this two-part series, we focused on how certain acne treatments, such as light and laser therapies, gene manipulation and current pills and topical products would influence acne treatment in coming years. In this second part of the series, we will look at a handful of other developments you can expect by 2050.
Multi-step systems: In one way or another, multi-step acne treatment and prevention systems have been around for a long time. Clearasil, for example, could rightfully point out that it has been selling cleaners along with benzoyl peroxide for some time. However, companies like Proactiv with its three-step treatment and prevention system have made multi-step product offerings popular, chic and, frankly, lucrative. The success of Proactiv has led to an outpouring of similar products from other manufacturers and this should continue.
Better cleansers: Companies are always experimenting with new cleansers and you can expect this to continue. Astringents have become milder and there are now soaps formulated for specific skin types. The race between companies is really to develop a product that can kill bacteria, keep pores clear and not dry out the skin or over-stimulate oil production. This competition will continue until someone perfects cleansing products.
Herbal remedies: The herbal remedy market is growing and the disinfecting powers of tea tree oil have already won it a part in some acne treatment regimens. There are millions of people who are true believers in herbal products and it has become a billion-dollar market. Expect herbal acne pastes and pills to hit the market in the next several years and to find high demand.
Better marketing to pregnant women: There are currently a great number of acne treatment products, particularly prescription products, which cannot be used by pregnant or nursing women. While pregnancy may give some women surprisingly clear skin, it does not have that effect on everyone as increased hormone and stress levels can mean increased blemishes. Expect companies to exploit the opportunity and market specialty lines of acne treatment products that are safe for pregnant and nursing women. As of now, it is an under-explored niche.
