Using Lasers to Treat Acne

Laser treatment is a new development that offers some hope to acne sufferers, but the cost of this method means you should be sure to do your research before committing to this course of treatment.

For years, laser treatment has been used to help improve the appearance of acne scarring. Recently, however, medical professionals have found that laser treatment may provide some benefits for reducing active acne outbreaks.

There are two ways that laser treatment helps reduce acne. First, it works as an anti-inflammatory agent to reduce the redness and swelling of acne and second, it destroys the most common type of acne-causing bacteria.

Laser treatment centers tend to use pulse-dye or low-to–mid-level intensity laser treatments to treat acne. The Lakewood Laser and Skin Renewal Center in Colorado claims the process can be effective at treating acne on any part of the body, and recommends 3-4 sessions for maximum results. There may be some initial redness right after the treatment, but that should subside quickly. The benefits of the sessions, Lakewood claims, can sometimes last for several months.

Dr. Shia B Wolgelernter, a Canadian doctor specializing in skin treatment, says results can occur in as little as 3-4 weeks, although you may see a more immediate reduction in redness and swelling.

The cost of laser treatment can range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars, depending on the severity of your acne and the number of treatments you require. As you may expect, the more skin you need treated, the more it will cost. Back treatment, for example, is typically more expensive than facial treatment.

The American Academy of Dermatology warns that certain types of laser treatment may not work on every type of acne, so you should consult a dermatologist before seeking out this type of treatment. Do not be afraid to ask for before-and-after photos at a laser treatment center and have a candid discussion of what types of results you can expect.

The use of lasers to treat acne is an ongoing science, with more research being conducted each year. It is not a bad idea to continue using topical skin products and antibiotics, even if you are getting laser treatment, but you should consult your doctor regarding these types of decisions.
