Will Pore Strips Work for You?

Biore launched a bit of a skin-care revolution several years ago when the skin-care company brought its pore strips to market, claiming they were the key to unclogging pores and blackheads on the nose (face strips eventually followed). After acne sufferers went out and bought them to see if they really could live up to the claims, it became apparent that they really did remove dirt. As most users know, once the strip is removed, you can see the dirt and pollutants that have been removed from your clogged pores on the thin strip.

The ingredients in a Biore pore strip are polyquaternium-37, silica, water, glycerin, PEG-12 dimethicone, titanium dioxide, and methylparaben. Pore strips are now made by other suppliers as well, such as Neutrogena, Johnson & Johnson and Ponds, and the ingredients are all very similar with the exception of Ponds. Ponds relies on PVM/MA, copolymer, aminomethyl and propanol according to the company’s packaging.

The process of using these strips is similar across the different brands. You wash your face and then thoroughly wet the area that is to be treated. If you do not wet the area in need of treatment, the strips will not stick. You remove the strips from the packaging and place one on the area in need of treatment, firmly pressing the smooth side down.

In about 10-15 minutes, the strip will harden as the chemicals in the strip bond with the dirt in your pores. Once it is stiff, pull it off and look at all the pollutants it has removed. It will feel a little like waxing, except you are removing dirt instead of hair.

There certainly is some upside to these strips. They seem to provide an effective pore cleaning and they are so cheap (less than $10) that you have little to lose. Plus, if you get clogged pores or blackheads on your nose, they could be worth a shot.

Of course, these pore strips cannot guarantee that they will keep you acne free. Most people will not use them enough and there are too many other factors that influence acne development, such as oil development and genetics, to provide such a simple cure-all. However, if you just want to give your pores a good cleaning, these strips are a cheap and low-risk option.
